What the dosha framework is actually for
Vata is one of the three doshas of classical Ayurveda, associated with movement, dryness and cold. It is a descriptive framework — a way of grouping tendencies so that a physician can reason about them — and it has been used that way for a very long time. It is not a medical diagnosis and it is not a personality type.
We have not put a quiz on this page, and that is deliberate. Assigning yourself a dosha from a list of statements is the one part of this tradition that translates badly, because the classical assessment is made in person, over time, by someone looking at you. What this shelf offers instead is the set of preparations that Kerala practice has traditionally reached for where vata is the consideration. Twenty of them are external and thirty-six are taken by mouth.
Three ways to use this shelf sensibly
- As a starting point, not an answer — A useful place to browse if a practitioner has already mentioned vata to you.
- Oils are the traditional emphasis — Warm sesame-based thailams and abhyanga sit at the centre of the classical response here.
- Ask before you commit — Free consultation with a Kairali physician is available, and is a better guide than any page can be.
Always read the label and directions on the pack you receive, and speak with your physician before starting anything new — particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, managing a health condition or taking prescription medicine.
